Can I pay by credit card everywhere in Madrid?

In Madrid, it's very common to pay by credit or debit card. Most shops, restaurants, museums, hotels and tourist services accept this payment method, making it easy to get around without having to carry large amounts of cash. Card payments are even accepted on public transport—including the Metro, local buses and taxis.

Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards, whereas American Express and Diners may not be accepted at every establishment.

Some small venues may require a minimum purchase amount, usually between €5 and €10. Mobile payments by phone or other electronic devices with contactless technology are also common.

For those who need cash, Madrid has an extensive network of ATMs available 24 hours a day. Fees or surcharges for using foreign cards depend on the issuing institution, so it's wise to check with your bank beforehand.

The official currency is the euro (€), and money can be exchanged at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, banks, the main bus and train stations and at exchange offices in the city centre, especially in Puerta del Sol.

In addition, travellers from outside the European Union can claim a VAT refund (Tax Free) on purchases made in participating DIVA shops by validating the form at a DIVA kiosk before leaving the EU. There are also refund points at the airport and at El Corte Inglés, which has dedicated service areas such as the Global Blue Lounge (Serrano, Preciados and Castellana) and the Tax Free Planet Lounge (No. 113 Calle de Claudio Coello).
