What's the weather like in Madrid in summer?

In summer, Madrid's weather is dry and hot, with average temperatures close to 30°C in July and August. Although the heat can be intense, the low humidity makes it easier to bear, and locals cool off in the many swimming pools found in the city centre and other areas.

During the summer months, the days become longer and the city's rhythm shifts towards the evening. When the heat subsides and the temperatures fall, the streets, squares and terraces come back to life and become the main spots for Madrid's social life.

August is the quietest part of the summer, as many Madrid residents head off on holiday. The city slows down, creating a different atmosphere, so it's a great time to visit to experience Madrid in all its summer glory.

Summer in Madrid is all about culture, diversity and celebration. Starting in June, the city hosts some of its most iconic events. The inclusive, festive spirit of Madrid Pride transforms the city centre into a mosaic of colours, music and activism, having become one of the largest and most emblematic celebrations in the world.

In July and August, the cultural programme ramps up with Veranos de la Villa, a festival that brings music, theatre, dance and cinema to every district, filling parks and squares with open-air activities.  At the same time, Madrid showcases its musical offering in different open-air stages, parks and city venues, where thousands of people enjoy a range of performances from pop and rock to classical music and jazz.

From 6 to 15 August, the Embajadores, Lavapiés and La Latina neighbourhoods celebrate the traditional San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma festivities, three of the most iconic public events in Madrid's calendar, which keep the tradition of open-air celebrations alive.

At the end of August and into September, temperatures gradually become milder, marking the beginning of the transition to autumn and the city's gradual return to everyday life.
